A Refreshing Mojito in Mint Condition

August 11, 2014 ,

When planting mint, you’ll discover how rampantly this herb grows. Luckily, it can be used in an almost infinite variety of sweet and savoury dishes. One way to enjoy this refreshing herb on a hot summer’s day is to prepare a delicious mojito, the national cocktail of Cuba. There are several variations of this classic.

The following recipe is by my Cuban friend Osquel:

Ingredients for one serving:

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 5 or 6 ice cubes
  • 1/2 lime, freshly squeezed
  • 3 tbsp white rum
  • 1/2 cup club soda
  • 1/2 lime cut into wedges

  1. Gently crush the mint and sugar in a mortar. Transfer into a glass.
  2. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour lime juice and rum and then top it up with club soda.
  3. Mix well and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with lime wedges and serve immediately.

Alcohol-free version: Use apple juice instead of rum.

¡salud (y pesetas)! (which means : Cheers!)
